Bohemia Manor's Zach Laird showed off his sprinting skills when it mattered most.
Laird overtook Boonsboro's Henry Schmidt with about 150 yards left in Saturday's MPSSAA cross country meet at Hereford High to capture his second consecutive state title. The Rising Sun girls finished fifth and the Bohemia Manor boys were sixth at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference cross country championship meet in Churchville Tuesday, October 23.
Led by race winners Emma Cease and Alex Longeway, the Rising Sun girls and Bohemia Manor boys captured the title at the Cecil County cross country meet held at Calvert Regional Park Tuesday, October 9.
Cease captured the girls event in a time of 20:01, eight seconds ahead of teammate Heather Horst. Emma Cease of Rising Sun and Elkton's Cameron Spaeth won the the individual races and the Tiger girls and Perryville boys took the team titles at the Susquehanna Division cross country meet Tuesday, October 2, at Perryville Community Park.
Emma Cease captured the girls race to lead the Rising Sun cross country team to a win over Elkton while the Elks' Cameron Spaeth won the boys event to propel his team to a triumph at Fair Hill Tuesday, September 18.
Bohemia Manor's Zach Laird demonstrated the power of positive thinking.
Laird relied on some personal affirmation while traversing the (understatement alert) hilly terrain at bucolic Hereford High School Saturday afternoon, "I'm winning this," he repeated to himself. Laird was correct. The Eagles' junior captured the individual Class 1A state crown while leading the Eagles to the team title. Zach Laird won the boys 1A East Region race to help the Bohemia Manor boys capture a 10th straight region crown last Thursday afternoon at Fair Hill.
The Bohemia Manor boys cross country team captured the team title at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference meet which was held Wednesday, October 25 in Fair Hill.
The Eagles (34) defeated Fallston (92), C. Milton Wright (94), Bel Air (94), Harford Tech (132), Elkton (174), North Harford (177), Patterson Mill (180), Perryville (257), Rising Sun (277), Aberdeen (282), Edgewood (303), and North East (334). North East's Yailynn Ramirez and Bohemia Manor's Zach Laird each captured an individual championship while the Eagles swept the team titles at the county cross country meet held Tuesday, October 17, at Calvert Regional Park.
